About Alicante Museums – MARQ Archeology Museum of Alicante
Created in 1932, this museum was moved into the building of the former San Juan de Dios provincial hospital in 2002. It is the most distinguished of all Alicante museums. Due to its fascinating avant-garde design and the use of modern audiovisual techniques, the museum was awarded the European Museum of the Year prize in 2004.
Its collection consists of more than 80,000 pieces found in local archaeological sites. You can take a journey through the history of Alicante area from the Stone Age, passing Iberian and Roman eras, to the medieval times. In addition, you can watch educational movies of high didactic value in each of the thematic rooms.
Besides the permanent exhibition, MARQ museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions. This year, from April to October 2011, you can visit the spectacular display of Russian Treasures. This exhibition is a product of cooperation between MARQ and the Museum of Hermitage, showing nearly five hundred pieces of different periods and territories of Russia.
This exhibition can be seen in Alicante from April to October 2011, and is an example of one of the most important archaeological collections in the world, preserved in the Hermitage (St. Petersburg). It shows the result of extensive research in the territories of the Russian Federation and neighboring countries.
