Alicante Old Town – El Barrio de Alicante
Alicante could be described as a fairly modern city, which retains a charming “old town” with a lot of attractive stories. It is not well recognized by the typical tourist, because it is hidden between the Rambla Avenue, Explanada promenade and the Castle of Santa Barbara.
Located on the slopes of Mount Benacantil, El Barrio de Alicante is a labyrinth of medieval streets, with many Spanish restaurants, tapas bars and night clubs.
Close to the sea, Alicante harbor and palm trees of Explanada promenade, Alicante Old Town is ideal place for having a romantic evening. You can try local Mediterranean food at the beautiful square La Plaza de Santa Faz. It is located behind the imposing City Hall, with twin towers. Surrounded by palm trees and historic buildings, it has a typical atmosphere of an old Valencian city.
In continuation, an admirable and impressive tour begins at Calle Mayor street. You approach the Cathedral of San Nicolás placed at the square Plaza del Abad Penalva. Its facade is simple, but with a certain charm that is worth visiting.
Other places of interest are the the Basilica of Santa Maria, which was originally a Muslim mosque, converted into a church after the Christian conquest. Built in Gothic style, it is also very well preserved. You can also visit several museums: MUBAG (El Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina), Museo Casa de la Asegurada and Museo de Belenes (Nativity Scene Museum).
The neighborhood has undergone a thorough restoration, which included the settlement of the sidewalks and pavements, renovation of buildings and new lighting. Today, El Barrio is one of the most charming places in Alicante, favourite among tourist and locals.
