About Alicante Museums – Alicante Nativity Scene Museum
If you want to feel a Christmas atmosphere, no matter of the season of the year, you can always visit Nativity scene museum. Its permanent exhibition includes many works of this Spanish tradition, as well as several pieces from other countries. It is situated in the Old Quarter of Alicante (behind the City Hall) in a typical historic building from the 19th century.
The first recorded nativity scene in Spain was in the 14th century in the cathedral of Barcelona. During the 16th century and counter-reformation, this art of expressing various aspects of the birth and the life of Jesus was spread through other catholic countries of Europe. It reached its maximum during the Baroque era in the southern Italy. This old tradition still plays a very important role in modern Spain. Each Christmas, you can see many nativity scenes in shops, public areas or private homes. Alicante museums
