We were recently asked by one of our readers “what are some of the best places to visit in Barcelona?”. Anyone that has visited Barcelona will know it’s hard to pick just one.
Just a 5-hour drive from Alicante, Barcelona is best known for its Mediterranean architecture and culture, as well as its busy nightlife and vibrant history. Additionally, the city is home to some of the most iconic landmarks in all of Europe, such as Gaudi’s Park Guell and La Pedrera.
It’s no wonder that Barcelona has been dubbed “The City of Lights”.
There are so many great places to visit in Barcelona, it’s hard to pick just a few! Here are five of our favorites:
1. Gaudi’s Park Guell – This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-see if you’re in Barcelona. With its beautiful architecture and sweeping views of the city, Gaudi’s Park Guell is a unique and beautiful place to spend a day.
2. La Pedrera – This incredible building is home to some of the most impressive stone carvings in the world. It’s an amazing place to visit for anyone who loves art and history, and is also one of the most photogenic spots in Barcelona.
3. Casa Batllo – This stunning Gothic building is one of Barcelona’s most popular attractions and is home to some of the city’s most iconic art pieces, including La Màgica (The Magician) by Salvador Dalí.
4. La Rambla – The world’s longest pedestrian street, La Rambla is a must-see for visitors to Barcelona. It has everything from trendy cafes and restaurants to souvenir shops and street performers.
5. Montjuïc – Montjuïc is a vast mountain that overlooks the city of Barcelona and is home to some amazing sights, including the Palace of Montjuïc and the Garden of Forking Paths.
Barcelona is well-known for its architecture, history, culture, and cuisine. Some of the most famous landmarks in Barcelona include the La Sagrada Familia cathedral, Gaudi’s Park Guell, La Pedrera castle ruins, and Casa Batllo palace. Additionally, many visitors enjoy checking out some of the city’s popular restaurants including the world renowned El Bulli restaurant (which sadly shut several years ago) or ZED restaurant which is still very much open and delighting customers.
As for food specifically associated with Barcelona? Paco Etxeberria is credited as being one of Spain’s first celebrity chefs when he opened his acclaimed seafood spot Camper king back in 1984. Regional specialties that can be found in Barcelonan kitchens include Catalan choucroute (a pigs head terrine served with sausages), Spanish octopus salad wrapped in rice paper triangles known as tortilla de patatas Bravas (potatoes bravas wrapped inside a scroll-like sausage made from pork stomachs), roast suckling pig with red cabbage and apple sauce called cotejarlo porcatgeano (highly rated roasted suckling pig dish also laced with applesauce), lamb shank paella featuring seasonal vegetables like peas and carrots alongside rice – all washed down by a nice glass of vino tinto!
