While most visitors come to La Manga for its warm Mediterranean climate, you might also want to consider visiting the ancient city of Cartagena. Founded in 227 BC, the city has a perfectly preserved amphitheatre and an isna, or battle ring, from the Roman era. The isna was rebuilt in 1854 and is now an important historical landmark. You may even catch a fight here. If you’re lucky enough to get to La Manga, you can enjoy it all!

The history of La Manga can be traced back 65 million to 1.7 million years ago. In those days, the area was part of an open bay in the Mediterranean. The Mar Menor basin was formed as a result of folding and rising of the land over a period of 10 million years. As the region grew in size and population, the area was reshaped and filled with sediment from rivers and the Campo de Cartagena.
