Travel to Alicante . . Alicante airport

Alicante airport Spain – El Altet – is one of the busiest airports in Spain. For many travelers, our airport is a gateway to their vacation on the Mediterranean.

Despite its relatively small size, it is directly connected to many cities of Europe. In addition, it is indirectly connected with the rest of the world by flights from Madrid or Barcelona.

In 2008, almost 10 million travelers arrived in Costa Blanca or the La Manga resorts through the airport of Alicante. Around 80% of all the visitors come from abroad. Most of the tourists are from UK, Germany, France, Holland and other European countries. Such a high number of passengers is no wonder. Apart from the city of Alicante, our airport serves as a traffic hub for other attractive holiday destinations in Alicante province. Perhaps, this year, you will spend your vacation in Benidorm, Torrevieja, Denia, or Calpe.

Location of the Airport of Alicante

The airport is located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) away from the Alicante city center, between the places of Torrellano and Urbanova, close to the city of Elche. You can reach it by car following A-79, N-338, and N-332 roads.

The new terminal is added in order to satisfy an increasing number of flights. Some of the airlines (such as Ryanair and EasyJet) are already operating from the new terminal.

Car rentals Alicante airport

The airport halls are spacious and clean, having direct access to the exterior through wide entrance doors. The arrival hall is on the ground floor, where you can take a snack in a coffee shop. On both sides of the arrival gate, you can find offices of Alicante car rent companies. There are 6 of them close to the coffee shop: Solmar, Goldcar rental, Europcar, Auriga Crown, Record, and Avis car hire Alicante agencies. Another 4 are placed closer to the exit: Sixt, Hertz, National-Atesa, and Centauro car rental. At the end of the corridor is a Police station. Close to the stairs, you will see offices of several travel agencies, such as Alicante Turismo.

Airport of Alicante – Check-In Area

The check-in area is placed on the first floor (actually Level-0). It is divided into two parts. In the first one (above the arrival hall), you can find 38 regular check-in posts of terminal T-1 (numbered from 1 to 38) and one post for bulky luggage (number 39). Passing by the last post and walking further through a corridor you enter another hall with the remaining check-in posts of terminal T-2 (numbered from 51 to 64). The departure hall is placed on the second floor (Level-1), with a standard shopping and restaurant area.

Close to the stairs and the elevator (which connect all three levels), you can find the Information desk, offices of several airline companies: Iberia, Flybe, Monarch, Air Europa, Spanair, Jet2, Air Algerie and Airberlin, as well as a self-service coffee bar La Marina. If you are interested in culture and history, pay attention to the copy of the famous ancient statue of an Iberian lady “La Dama de Elche” (5th century B.C.), placed nearby in a glass display case. Other offices (such as Alicante air service, Thomas Cook, Air Finland, ServisAir, Thomson Tui, Travelplan, and Aga airlines) are placed near the last check-in post No.39. Finally, you can find the offices of Easy Jet and Menzies Aviation in the second hall of terminal T-2.

The staff of the airport is friendly and ready to help. Most of them speak English – nevertheless, you should talk to them slowly. The staff is really efficient and the airport is organized well. Contrary to some rare negative opinions about Alicante airport that could appear on the Web, I have never had any bad experience. My luggage always arrived; it was never lost nor damaged. Whether taking a short trip towards Palma or Madrid or coming from far away cities such as London, neither my friends nor I had any problems. However, if it happens that your luggage is missing, you should not panic. The airport staff is there to help. You have to fill in the form and follow the standard procedure. In the worst case, you will get a survival package, containing everything to cover your basic daily needs. The lost luggage should normally be found within 24 hours.
